Parenting Yourself: Ultimate Self Care

January 20, 2021

self care

This past year has really been a doozy.  For most of us, our lives have been upended in ways we could have never anticipated or prepared for.  And that leaves many of us parents in a lurch.  Even if what we were doing – the family dance – was working, and healthy and everyone had their boundaries respected and their needs met, that’s probably not the case now.  For many of use self care goes out the window and then I had a reframe – Parenting YOURSELF.

Let me explain…I was lamenting to a friend how distance learning is so hard to manage.  I felt like I was at a point where I didn’t even have time for the basics because everything is SO BUSY.  I was skipping meals, skipping vitamins, skipping showers.  My bedtime was being pushed later and later and my sleep was suffering – as well as my daytime brainpower.

My friend heard me.  Then paused.  Then she asked “Do you ever let your kids do any of that?”

“No.  I suppose I don’t.”

“So why aren’t you treating yourself as good as you treat them?  Stop rebelling against yourself and parent YOURSELF.”

Wow.

That kinda stung, but it was just the reframe I needed.

What I did next

I sat down with myself and did some Active Listening.  What were the needs I had that weren’t being met?

I needed sleep, energy, peace and that often came in the form of regular meals, daily vitamins, more frequent showers, and an earlier, more appropriate bedtime for my sleep needs.  Then I set out to do some problem solving.

Regular meals that met my dietary needs could be solved by meal planning and food prep.

Taking my daily vitamins was a cheap and easy solve – a daily pill dispenser.

I added daily exercise to my schedule, at a time that would not take away from being accessible during distance learning, and also allowed me to complete whatever housekeeping and work tasks I had on the docket.

Does this mean that distance learning will now be magically easier and less stressful?  Not. At. All.  But it does mean that I can go into it each day feeling better.  I had a huge blind spot.  I was missing meeting some of my basic needs and it was making things harder.

Self care isn’t always massages and manicures.  Self care starts with the basics!  Take care of yourself like a parent would.  Hold yourself to the same standards of care you hold for you kids.

Here’s how to get started on YOUR basics:

What needs do you have that aren’t being met?

What are some possible solutions?  Make a list and enlist help from your kids if you need to.  They are wonderful for ideas that are outside of our “adult” box.

Which of these solutions is doable, right now, and will work for the whole family?

Write it up to keep it fresh in your mind. Add reminders to your calendar or make a daily checklist.

When a solution you thought would work just ISN’T, engage your flexibility muscles and try to find a new solution instead of trying to slog through.

The bonus here is that these same tools work for your partner, other caregivers, and your children.  And by modeling how important the basics are, we can show our kids what self care looks and feels like.

These tools for listening, communication, and problem solving are key to parenting respectfully.  Self care isn’t just developing routines and systems, but also communication that works.  Understanding, developing, and practicing these tools are part of caring for yourself as well.  You can’t do the work without the tools.  And the right tools for the job make all the difference. If you are new to respectful parenting, or a long time life learner needing a refresh, please join my online book study “Beyond the Book” as we dive into P.E.T., learn the techniques, practice them together, and get valuable coaching with a cohort of like minded caregivers.

Daily Parenting Inspiration

One of the most powerful gifts we can give our chi One of the most powerful gifts we can give our children isn’t correction, advice, or even praise.
It’s acceptance.

In Parent Effectiveness Training, acceptance isn’t about permissiveness or “letting everything slide.” It’s about separating who a child is from what a child does. When children feel accepted as they are, they feel safe. And when they feel safe, they are far more open to learning, cooperation, and growth.

Acceptance tells a child, “You are loved—even when your behavior needs work.”

That message sinks deep. It becomes the quiet inner voice that says, I matter. I’m okay. I belong.

And that inner feeling?
It changes everything. 💛

Ever had your child shout that at you? (🙋‍♀️🙋‍♂️) Ever had your child shout that at you? (🙋‍♀️🙋‍♂️) It stings—especially when you’re trying so hard to be there for them.

Here’s the secret: when kids feel unheard, they get louder. Yelling is often just code for “Please listen differently.”

That’s where Active Listening comes in. Instead of jumping in with advice or correction, we reflect back what we hear—feelings and words. It’s like holding up a mirror so they know, “Yes, you get me.”

Example:
Child: “You don’t understand! Everyone ignored me at school today!”
Parent (Active Listening): “It sounds like you felt left out and invisible at recess.”

See the shift? Instead of a power struggle, you’ve built a bridge. And once they feel understood, the yelling usually softens.

In P.E.T. class, we practice this together with role-playing and real-life examples—so you’re not just reading about it, you’re actually building the skill.

👂 Because sometimes the best way to quiet a storm is to simply (active) listen.

📅 Class begins: Tuesday, Sept 23 - November 11

When it comes to parenting, one of the most powerf When it comes to parenting, one of the most powerful shifts you can make is understanding who owns the problem.

Here’s what I mean: sometimes your child says or does something that shows she’s upset—like crying, or telling you, “I don’t have any friends.” That’s a signal that she owns the problem. Your role? To be supportive and listen, but not to swoop in and fix it for her. (Easier said than done, right? 😉) This is where P.E.T. skills shine—you’ll learn how to help your child take responsibility for solving her own challenges, while still feeling your support.

Other times, things are rolling along smoothly. You’re good. Your child’s good. Everyone’s needs are met. This is what we call the “No Problem Area,” and the whole goal is to grow this part of your relationship as much as possible. P.E.T. gives you the tools to do just that.

But let’s be real—not every day is smooth sailing. Sometimes your child’s behavior just isn’t working for you. In those moments, you own the problem. P.E.T. teaches you effective (and respectful) ways to influence your child without hurting the relationship in the process.

And then there are those inevitable times when both of you are frustrated. Your needs clash, your child’s needs clash, and—yep—you both own the problem. P.E.T. has a game-changing way to work through those conflicts so that everyone’s needs get met.

At the heart of P.E.T. is this: the more you use these skills, the more you expand your No Problem Area—that sweet spot where connection, cooperation, and joy live. And honestly, isn’t that what we all want more of in our families?

Two ways to greet your teen when they walk in late Two ways to greet your teen when they walk in late:

❌ "I’ve been waiting up for you! You’re grounded!"
✅ "I’m so glad you’re safe. I was so worried!"

Same situation.
Completely different outcome.

The first usually ends the conversation before it starts.
The second often opens the door to more information—and maybe even a whole story about why they were late (sometimes with a very good reason you never expected).

P.E.T. taught me that when emotions are high, connection before correction changes everything. 💛

Which one would you have wanted to hear as a teenager?

Some seasons of parenting feel like they last fore Some seasons of parenting feel like they last forever… and some fly by in a blink. My last season? Somehow both at the same time. 😅 (More on that another day!)
.

But here’s the headline—P.E.T. classes are BACK… and for the first time in a long while, there’s a night class! 🎉
.

Why am I so excited? Here’s one reason:

After a year of my girl being quiet and withdrawn, she turned a corner. She’s talking to me again, chatting with grown-ups, sharing her world. 7th grade was hard—I knew it would be—but it was hard on me too. I had to trust her process, lean on the tools I teach, and practice that radical acceptance… and guess what? She came back strong. 💪💙
