Docia Zavitkovsky said an amazing thing, that I ran across today on the website for Roseville Community Preschool.
It is not our job to get children ready for school, but to get schools ready for children.
– Docia Zavitkovsky
This quote speaks to my desire to rethink schooling entirely. Most schools today just are not designed to accommodate the curiosity and activity level of children, and now we are hearing more and more about how preschools need to prepare children for kindergarten.
How should preschools prepare children for kindergarten? For me, that does not mean teaching them—anything. They are primed to learn already, to learn from their environments and learn from other children. They don’t need letters and numbers, not yet. They just need people and things to play with.
Docia and I agree that we shouldn’t hurry children into academics and that at preschool age the most important thing children can be doing is playing and being creative.
What do you think the role of preschool is?
